Don't put me to a label

I'm really rather rare

Don't put me to a label

I'm really over there.

Labels are for linears

like you and you and you.

For me there's only me and I

no label there at all.

So don't put me to a label

It's more than I can bear.

Just don't give me a label, not such a one as I

I come in many colors, all made to match the sky.

Dr. Sethanne Howard is a research astronomer. This is her third book. She has a PhD in astrophysics from Georgia State University.

The contest is open to American and Canadian children in kindergarten, first, second and third grades, ages 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 years old. Contest rules require the entrant to submit a poem and a cut paper illustration for that poem. Poetry by children draws on two natural tendencies of childhood: imagination and play. It's also a good tool to use to teach reading.
